At least, not according to deviantArt.
Seriously, as long as I've been in school, I've been taught that music is one of the world's most recognized art, and yet here at dA, we musicians have been seriously misrepresented. An art, as defined by Susanne Langer (1895 - 1985), is the creation of forms symbolic or expressive of human feeling. In addition, to classify as art, the artist must have created the said creation intentionally, thereby eliminating "accidents" such as spilling a can of paint into the shape of the Virgin Mary.
Take another look at that: the creation of forms symbolic and expressive of human feeling. Naturally, we can see how this includes our base ideas of art (painting, drawing, etc.) as the artist's images come from within. If dA had left it at that, then I ould be content, as they weren't excluding other arts, they are simply creating a site devoted to "artwork." Unfortunely for them, this is not the case. Instead, deviantArt makes it very clear that they mean art as a whole by allowing deviants to submit not only visual art, but written art as well. Poetry, prose, non-fiction, drama, student essays...doesn't matter. If it's written, you can post it. With the relatively new ability to post videos as well, even dance has its place on dA now (don't tell me you can't do it, because a friend of mine definitely did). But what about music? Where does music, one of the most expressive and symbolic pratices of mankind, fit into this whole spectrum of things? Not on dA, that's where.
Oh, and I know, what about all of the people who awkwardly strum three basic chords of an out-of-tune guitar and call it art? Well, what about all of the people who google search images, apply a single filter in photoshop, and post it as art? Or people who take a picture of everything they see with a disposable camera and call it photography? My point is, you're going to get those people no matter what art form you look at, just as you will get people who are absolutely incredible at what they do.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that deviantArt needs to give us the ability to submit music as its own art form, as it has been and always will be one of the most popular forms of human expression so long as this world exists. Seriously guys. Think about it.
